FAQ's
How does acupuncture work?
Studies have shown that acupuncture boosts the body's natural ability to heal. Considerable evidence supports the claim that
acupuncture changes our biochemical make up. Enkephalins and endorphins (natural pain killers) are just two of the many
substances that are affected by acupuncture. Other studies show that acupuncture regulates hormones and stimulates immune
response. Although there are many theories, a complete mechanism of action for acupuncture has yet to be determined.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles used in acupuncture are very thin and fine, about the breadth of a human hair. There is some sensation associated
with acupuncture, but often you will not know that a needle has been inserted. Some people describe a dull heavy achy or warm
sensation after the needle is inserted as the nervous system is stimulated. Any sensation associated with needling quickly
dissipates and you will be comfortable and relaxed for the duration of the session.
How many treatments will it take?
Typically acute conditions resolve more quickly than chronic ones. Treatment is highly individualized and I can give you a better
idea of the number of treatments required and the odds of success after meeting you and assessing your health conditions at
your first acupuncture visit. You can also schedule a free consultation if you prefer.
Is acupuncture safe?
According to the Mayo clinic the risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner. The
National Institute of Health states that "one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is
substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted procedures for the same conditions."
Is treatment only for when I am sick?
Acupuncture is very effective at increasing wellness and preventing illness. It can boost the immune system and balance the
body to increase overall health and sense of well being.
Will my insurance cover acupuncture?
